Gianna Lauren’s second release with Forward Music Group is On Personhood, a strongly-convicted testament to the Canadian indie catalogue and a leap forward for Lauren’s repertoire of atmospheric rock. The band features musicians Justin Nace and J. J. Ipsen (J.J. Ipsen and the Paper Crown), Marshall Bureau (Octoberman, Barzin, the Pinecones), and engineer Andy Magoffin (Two-Minute Miracles, Constantines, Feist, Jenny Omnichord).

The six-song tour de force was recorded live-off-the-floor at the new House of Miracles, an upgraded 19th century stone horse stable turned studio, its grandeur impressive considering the subtlety of the location. Lauren brought the group together for five summer days in 2012 to write, rehearse, and record. The studio’s deft stone surroundings are framed within the sonic production; a deep warm and sludgy analogue blanket. On Personhood webs a variety of silky and edgy textures to Lauren’s fragile vocal confidence. Warm guitar tones, brooding melodies and remarkable tenor are the cornerstones of Lauren’s sound. Her songs are laced with themes of human behaviour and adaptation, and are delivered with thoughtful and charismatic performances.

“A soulful interpretation of love and life that many people will be able to relate to. It is a perfect record to listen to during a quiet weekend of studying or as background music for a date, as most of the tracks are perfectly attuned for a slow dance.” – The Cadre
